Easton spoils Kent’s home-opening meet
CHESTERTOWN — Easton swept host Kent County in a high school swim meet Dec. 20 at Washington College. It wasn’t close. Easton won every event and also placed second in most events.
“If you look at the scores, we did not do well,” head coach Ruth Reed said of the Trojans’ home opener.
But looking only at the scores would be unfair to the Trojans, who continue to get better.
For example, first-year high school swimmers Jack Cullum, Ian Walters and Alystair McKenzie each lopped off a huge amount of time in their respective 50 freestyle splits.
Walters, McKenzie and Jake Jones have impressed coaches Reed and Caren Saunders with improved strokes and faster times.
On the girls’ side, all of Kent’s entries in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke are novices.
Because of the Trojans’ inexperience, senior captain Brianna Pierce has stepped up to swim the 100 butterfly and senior Kathryn Bannister has volunteered to swim the 200 individual medley — two demanding events.
Pierce was the runner-up in the fly last week against Easton’s girls, who are the defending region champions.
Junior Shane Saunders and sophomore Andrew Smith placed second in the 100 fly and 200 individual medley, respectively.
