Bainbridge’s Holley McFadden tops Sun volleyball honors

- Jeff Graham

For a student-athlete whose mom played collegiate volleyball at Oregon State University, Bainbridge High School’s Holley McFadden is doing her part to carry on the family legacy of making an impact on the court.

Voted captain by her teammates this fall, McFadden led Bainbridge to a 14-6 record and a berth in the West Central/ Southwest Bi-District 3A tournament. She shared the Olympic League most valuable player honor with North Kitsap senior Ireland Burdick.

McFadden, a junior outside hitter, is the Kitsap Sun volleyball player of the year for 2023.

The 6-foot-4 Spartan was the top offensive force in the area, leading all West Sound players with 280 kills. Bainbridge head coach Andy Stephens has no doubt that McFadden scared defenses with her dynamic, powerful spiking-ability.

“I know that because she scared some on my defense,” said Stephens, whose roster included Olympic League defensive MVP Emma Pendleton.

McFadden also displayed versatility as she recorded 147 digs, 16 blocks and 47 aces to go along with a 89% serve rating.

It was McFadden’s calmness under pressure that helped the Spartans succeed at critical points of the season, including a five-set win against Bonney Lake in a district tournament play-in game.

“She was the one that didn’t panic and got the rest of the team to relax,” Stephens said.

“We had amazing energy that day,” McFadden added. “That was something that I was trying to work on personally as a team-leader. I was working on that all year.”

Despite being finished with her high school season, McFadden will continue competing with her Seattlebased North Pacific Juniors Volleyball Club team this winter as the college recruiting process picks up. She’s headed to Houston for an event later this month.

“It’s so fun,” McFadden said. “I love tournaments.”
