STILL THE BEST
North Kitsap’s Sloman repeats as Sun’s football player of the year
North Kitsap football player Logan Sloman remembers being on a Zoom call with offensive coordinator Chris Richardson prior to his freshman season and discussing his potential as a wide receiver.
“I told Richardson, ‘My goal in high school is to have a 1,000-yard season,’” Sloman said.
Sloman ended up reaching that goal — twice.
This season, Sloman bested his own school single-season receiving records, finishing with 61 catches for 1,012 yards and 18 touchdowns. The yardage trails only Port Angeles’ Jacob Madison (1,164 in 2007) and Olympic’s Butch Englebright (1,074 in 1983) in West Sound history.
In the process, Sloman became the first West Sound player to eclipse 3,000 receiving yards in a career. He totaled 1,008 yards as a junior, 819 yards as a sophomore, and 213 yards during a COVID-shortened five-game season as a freshman. He finished with 3,052 receiving yards as a Viking.
Sloman earns the Kitsap Sun football player of the year honor for the second consecutive year, joining fellow Viking alums Colton Bower (2020-21) and Jared Prince (2003-04) as two-time recipients of the award.
“Logan is the best receiver and one of the top players to ever play football at North Kitsap,” Vikings head coach Jeff Weible said. “He has been a great leader and has left the program better than he found it. He is such a great athlete who makes the game look easy. Some of the catches he’s made over the past four years have been unbelievable.”
North Kitsap’s program has had no shortage of record-setting players in recent seasons.
Dax Solis set new school records at running back in 2017, finishing with 1,944 yards and 35 touchdowns on the ground. The yardage is the sixth-best total in West Sound history.
Four years later, Bower posted new single-season school-bests in passing yardage (2,669 yards) and passing touchdowns (45). The only quarterback in West Sound with more passing yardage is Port Angeles’ Eric Lane, who threw for 2,733 yards in 2007.
Now Sloman will go down as arguably the best receiver in West Sound history, though he also made an impact elsewhere. He added 165 yards and a pair of touchdowns rushing while posting 82 tackles, six interceptions on 14 pass breakups on defense. The Olympic League MVP-award winner finished the season playing safety after beginning the campaign at cornerback.
“He just has a knack to be in the right place at the right time,” Weible said, “and that speaks to his football IQ as well as being a great athlete.”
Although Sloman and the Vikings weren’t able to secure a Class 2A title during his career, North Kitsap only lost five games across his four seasons and qualified for the state semifinals three times, making the finals in 2022.
“It was always a goal of mine just to do what I can to help us win,” Sloman said. “I always wanted a state championship. Unfortunately we didn’t get that, but it was a goal of mine, so I knew I had to put in work.”
Moving forward, Sloman hopes to get a chance to play in college. He’d love to continue playing receiver, but could be an option on the defensive side of the ball.
“I love both of them,” Sloman said. “I’m leaning toward receiver. But college ... you don’t know what you are going to do. You have running backs going to linebacker, safeties going to corner. You can move wherever. I’m prepared to do that.”
