Kitsap Sun

Did columnist forget which president he’s watching?

- James U. Behrend, Bainbridge Island

Isaac Willbour, a national “award-winning journalist” who recently had a column published on the Kitsap Sun opinion page, claims that Democrats are “stroking racial division” and that “minority voters might be turning away from Biden” unless he “turns his rhetoric into action.”

“I would like my president to both condemn white supremacy and refrain from hurling racially charged insults at Americans of color,” Willbour writes.

“Racially charged insults”? Is Mr. Willbour confusing mild-mannered, always civil Joe Biden with Donald Trump, who was sued in 1973 by the Justice Department for not renting apartments to minorities? Who demanded in 1989 the death penalty for five innocent black teenagers accused of rape. Who claimed that his political opponents are “vermin,” that immigrants “poison the blood of our country,” and Mexican immigrants are “bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're rapists.” Who banned Muslims from entering the U.S.

Hasn't President Biden put “action to lofty words”? He ended the Afghanistan War, passed the bipartisan Covid Relief Act, the Infrastructure Act, an Inflation Reduction Act, and the CHIPS Act, bolstering US semiconductor manufacturing. He passed a bipartisan Gun Safety Act and lowered the cost for prescription drugs.

However, Mr. Trump was not idle either. He built his legal defense account, built his twitter base, and built a wall the Mexicans paid for. He also passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, reducing taxes for those who are burden by wealth. A Supreme Court with three of his appointees terminated Roe v. Wade. Of course, his legacy will always be January 6.
