- Alvin “Al” Meriwell Johnson peacefully passed away in his sleep at his Loudon, TN home on February 9, 2024, at the age of 87. He was born on January 31, 1937, to Giles and Janie Johnson in Gretna, VA. Al excelled in sports, notably scoring the first touchdown in Gretna High School football history. He earned his degree in Accounting from Lynchburg College and later married his beloved Patsy Sharpe in 1982, with whom he shared three children: Jeff, Lisa, and Jennifer.

Al dedicated himself to a fulfilling career, overseeing the accounting department in the Naval Nuclear Fuel Division at B & W until his retirement. He and Patsy cherished their time in Loudon, indulging in boating, golf, and observing fellow golfers tackle the 16th hole on Tanasi from their sunroom. A passionate music enthusiast, Al lent his voice to church choirs and the Knoxville Choral Society, often gracing family and friends’ weddings with his singing. Together, Al and Patsy explored the world, immersing themselves in diverse cultures and historic landmarks. He is survived by his son Jeff Johnson (Masako) of Leesburg, VA, stepdaught­ers Lisa S. Farley (Bill) of Huddleston, VA, Jennifer A. Jarvis (Bill) of Southport, NC, sisters Ann Roach of Gretna, VA, Eleanor Amos of Jacksonvil­le, FL, brother Mack Johnson of Gretna, VA, grandchild­ren Yusuke Johnson (Niki) of Leesburg, VA, Erik Johnson (Rachel) of Philadelph­ia, PA, Logan Jarvis (Pate) of Charlottes­ville, VA, Hannah Westover (Baxter) of Charlotte, NC, and great-granddaugh­ter Jolie G. Westover. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Johnson, parents Giles and Janie Johnson, sister Bernell Mayhew, and brother Aubrey Johnson.

A Celebratio­n of Life will be held Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 11:00 am, at the Community Church at Tellico Village, 130 Chota Center, Loudon, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributi­ons be made to the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or The Community Church at Tellico Village.
