- Cora Hall

Former Lady Vols basketball assistant coach Joy McCorvey has been hired for her first head coaching job.

Stony Brook announced McCorvey as its new women’s coach Monday. McCorvey spent the last three seasons on former coach Kellie Harper’s staff at Tennessee. Harper was fired April 1 after five seasons and McCorvey was not retained by new coach Kim Caldwell.

McCorvey will be the 11th coach in program history.

“I am beyond excited to welcome Joy to the Stony Brook family as our new women’s basketball coach,” Stony Brook athletic director Shawn Heilbron said in a school release. “She rose to the top of an incredibly strong group of candidates and is uniquely poised to lead our program forward. Her dynamic personality and extremely high-level of basketball intelligence will enable her to come in and make an immediate impact. Most importantly, she truly cares about the student-athlete experience and will inspire our women to achieve greatness on and off of the court.”

It appears no assistants will be retained from Harper’s staff after McCorvey’s hiring. It was reported Sunday that Samantha Williams was not retained and another report Monday said Caldwell is hiring Mississippi State associate head coach Gabe Lazo and Alabama assistant coach Roman Tubner.

McCorvey’s teams went 286-143 in 13 seasons as an assistant coach. They also made 12 postseason appearances (eight NCAA Tournaments and four WNITs), and she was on staff for Michigan’s WNIT championship run. Prior to her time with the Lady Vols, McCorvey spent three seasons at Florida State. She was the associate head coach in her last season on Sue Semrau’s staff.

Arico at St. John’s from 2006-10 and joined her staff in 2011. Barnes Arico then hired McCorvey on her staff at Michigan when she was hired in 2012. McCorvey was with the Wolverines until 2018 before making the move to Florida State.

“I am humbled and honored to be the next head women’s basketball coach at Stony Brook University,” McCorvey said in a school release. “I am grateful to Shawn Heilbron, his leadership team, as well as President McInnis for their trust in me to help guide this program. Stony Brook is an incredible place that prides itself on academic and athletic excellence, and I’m eager for the opportunity to continue the winning tradition.” McCorvey started her coaching career at her alma mater on her former coach’s staff.
