Chilean people become the first in Latin America with Musk’s Internet

Santiago de Chile, Aug (EFE) – The Chilean town of Sotomó, in the southern region of Los Lagos, became the first in Latin America to have the services of the Starlink satellite Internet network, promoted by the founder of Tesla and the aerospace company Spacex, Elon Musk.

Friday the head of the portfolio, Gloria Hutt, formally began the operation in this small town, where 20 families live, and that together with Caleta Sierra in the region from Coquimbo (north), is part of Starlink’s pilot plan in Chile.

“This revolutionary technology will allow us to bring highspeed connection to the most extreme points of our vast and varied geography, democratizing Internet access and all the benefits it brings,” said Hutt.

Without roads or land vehicles, access to Sotomó is only possible through private boats or subsidized services that navigate the Reloncaví Estuary.

The town has electricity for about 12 hours a day thanks to a diesel generator delivered by the Regional Government in 2019, while the absence of a drinking water system is resolved by the rivers present in the area.

“However, the installation of an antenna on the roof of the local school responded to an important part of the isolation in which the sotamoninos live and demonstrated the effectiveness of Starlink’s technology in places of extreme geography,” the Ministry said in a statement.

With the operational network, the students were able to carry out various activities “previously unreachable from the place”, such as playing high definition videos, connecting to educational platforms and making video calls without interruptions, the information abounded.

The connection is available free of charge for all the inhabitants of the sector who come to the school and during the next few days it will also be put into operation in the town of Caleta Sierra.

Starlink is a project of the Spacex company that seeks to provide connectivity in isolated areas of the planet where it is difficult to reach with terrestrial infrastructure.

The system depends on the constellation of satellites that the aerospace company has put into orbit.
