The new armed conflict exposes the republican hypocrisy

-

Without a doubt, the theme of Republican hypocrisy is inexhaustible. Now it turns out that the same Republicans who were silent when then President Donald Trump praised the autocrat Vladimir Putin now want to become the defenders of democracy in the face of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. What’s more, they are now attacking President Joe Biden for not taking more drastic measures against Putin and Russia.

“Russia, if you are listening…”, then presidential candidate Trump also said in 2016 in a mocking tone and suggested that a foreign power hack the emails of his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton. And he added: "I think they would be highly recognized by our press", in an invitation to violate a democratic process, turning the issue into a dangerous matter of national security. However, the unusual Republican silence to Trump's trampling on US political sovereignty was deafening. Moreover, those same Republicans encouraged the idea of this happening, acting more like traitors than patriots.

Now, Republican House Minority Leader and Trump ally Kevin Mccarthy declared that "Putin must answer for his actions," but when the former KGB leader and his government poked their nose into the US election to favor Trump, then he argued that it was a "witch hunt" by the Democrats against Trump.

The former president also condemned the invasion, but as he always does when he talks about Putin, he did not attack him, but called him "intelligent" and a "genius."

Indeed, psychologically speaking, a subject like Trump cannot avoid the admiration he feels towards the autocrats he would like to imitate, regardless of their ideology, because what moves the owner of Mar-a-lago is not only power, but also showing that he has and that he exercises it for his own purposes and not for the nation. Kim-jong-un, the supreme leader of North Korea, is also his other self.

Thus, those same Republicans have turned a blind eye to the attacks by Trump and his followers on our democracy, minimizing the assault on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021 by a mob inflamed and fueled by Trump, who wanted to prevent the certification of the results of a democratic election in favor of Biden.

That is to say, now they talk about the defense of democracy, but when it comes to an attack on ours, either due to foreign interference by Russia or due to the actions of some mutineers who call the 2020 election "fraudulent" only because their candidate lost, so they justify the unjustifiable.

They fool no one but themselves, of course. But with this double game to which they are already accustomed and in which they conveniently coexist, they continue to harm domestic democracy, despite the fact that they now feel sorry for the infamy that the new armed conflict of the 21st century brings, especially when the consequence immediate is the wave of refugees urgently looking for a place to live.

In the present conflict, of course, we are likely to see other types of hypocrisy.

For example, and with full justification, calls have increased for the United States to grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) to Ukrainians living in this country. It is estimated that some 28,000 Ukrainians could benefit from TPS.

Nobody knows for sure how this unnecessary warfare initiated by the imperialist aspirations of an autocrat will culminate. But the truth is that, in the immediate term, the most urgent thing is to attend to the human displacement that conduct all military action. (America’s Voice)
