Tulsans enjoy The Square at Nam Hai
...which organizers described as “a pop-up public plaza with vendors, artists, activities, food trucks, and entertainment.”
Branded as “The Square at Nam Hai,” the family-friendly event attracted visitors throughout the day with a diverse offering of music, dance, games for kids, and an atmosphere of community and fun.
“We were really thrilled with the success of the Tulsa Global District’s first community event,” Rodrigo Rojas, Deputy Chief of Staff to Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum, told La Semana. “We estimate that 1,500 2000 visited ‘the square’ throughout the course of the day, and we have received very positive comments from guests and vendors.”
Performances could be enjoyed all day long, and represented the vibrancy and diversity embodied by the Global District.
Entertaining the crowds at The Square at Nam Hai were Tulsa Honor Academy Ballet Folklórico; Tonatiuh Dance Company; Kaajhuab Dance Team; China Rose Folk Dance Troupe; Qeej Performance; Ballet Folklórico Sol Azteca; Lion Dancers; Moonlight Blossoms, Nkauh Huam Ci and Family Band; Baila Tulsa; and DJ Klave.
On hand to provide activities and information were Hilo de Amore – Thread of Love; La Bikina; Tulsa Global Alliance; FC Tulsa; Philbrook Museum; and Hispanic Resource Center. A live mural was created by vnice and Eric Chavez.
Signage and a map pointed to the numerous shops, markets, and restaurants in the Tulsa Global District.
In addition to being a great destination, Tulsa Global District is a nonprofit organization organized through the city’s “main street” initiative, with a focus on “safe and welcoming neighborhoods, inclusive economic development, and celebrating multicultural diversity.”
Rojas said that residents can look forward to more community happenings in East Tulsa in the months ahead.
“Given the overall success of this first event, the Global District is looking at options to have events throughout the year throughout the District,” he promised. (La Semana)
