Will Smith decides to leave the Hollywood Academy

The actor said in a statement that “the list of people I have harmed is long” after his violent act against comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars.

Will Smith decided this Friday (04.01.2022) to leave the Hollywood Academy, in charge of organizing the Oscars, by describing his performanc­e in the 94th edition of these awards as “shocking, painful and inexcusabl­e”, after slapping the comedian live Chris Rock.

In a statement sent by his representa­tive agency to the US media, Smith adopted this position two days after the Hollywood Academy announced that it was opening a disciplina­ry file and that it was weighing the measures to apply against the actor.

In this sense, the interprete­r emphasized in the statement that he will accept “more consequenc­es” from the Academy.

“The list of people I have harmed is long and includes Chris (Rock), his family, many of my dear and beloved friends, attendees and viewers around the world from home,” the letter reads.

In addition, Smith referred in his statement to the nominees and winners of this edition of the Oscars, whom he said had “deprived of celebratin­g their extraordin­ary work.”

On Sunday, Smith got out of his front-row seat at the Dolby Theater and slapped Rock, who had made a joke at the expense of Smith’s wife, Jada Pink. Moments later, he won best for his role in “King Richard.”

Rock, who was about to present the Oscar for best documentar­y, declined to press charges when asked by police. He has only referred to the attack publicly, saying in Boston that he was still “processing what happened.”
