Guillermo del Toro, 'Argentina, 1985,' and Ana de Armas among BAFTA 2023 nominees
The 76th edition of the award ceremony hosted by the British Academy of Motion Picture Arts will be held on February 19 in London.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the nominees for the 2023 BAFTAS. The 76th award ceremony will be held on February 19 in London at the Royal Festival Hall instead of the Royal Albert Hall, and will be hosted by Richard E. Grant.
Similarly to the Golden Globes or the Critics Choice Awards, Hayley Atwell and Toheeb Jimoh named off many of the names who were already nominated at previous award ceremonies. However, unlike the other ceremonies, All Quiet on the Western Front was the overwhelming favorite at the BAFTAS, earning 14 nominations, compared to 10 for The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Hispanic nominations at BAFTAS
Among the Hispanic nominees, the trend seen at previous awards shows continues, with repeat nominations at the BAFTAS. Guillermo del Toro, Ana de Armas, and Argentina, 1985 are eligible for the following awards, respectively: Best Animated Film, Best Soundtrack, and Best Production Design for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio; Best Actress for Blonde; and, Best Foreign Film for the feature film directed by Santiago Mitre.
It is also surprising that Alejandro Iñarritu was left out of the BAFTA nominees for Best Foreign Film for Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths. In the movie, he tells the story of the existential crisis suffered by a journalist and documentary filmmaker from Mexico upon returning to his native country.
