Spain announce ’anti-racism’ friendly against Brazil at Santiago Bernabeu
Will be played at Bernabeu on March 26
Spain have announced a friendly matchup against Brazil at the Santiago Bernabeu in late March to promote "anti-racism" in the country.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Spain has been the epicentre for multiple incidents of racism on the footballing level as players like Vinicius Jr, Dani Alves, Eder Militao and many others have received racist insults on the Beld. The RFEF and La Liga have since started taking measures against the supporters who have been spotted passing racist remarks. The latest campaign against racism has been launched by the Spanish Federation by the way of organising a friendly with Brazil at Real Madrid's stadium.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The friendly has been campaigned with the tagline "the same skin" as a message against racism. The match between the two heavyweight nations will likely feature stars like Vinicius Jr, Raphinha, Endrick, and Militao among others. The date for the friendly clash has been set for March 26, three days after Brazil's friendly against England at the iconic Wembley Stadium. DID YOU KNOW?
There is currently an ongoing court hearing in Spain after Vinicius and Militao were targeted by a section of Valencia fans at the Mestalla when Real Madrid travelled to take on Los Che in July of 2023. The hearing is currently ongoing and many stars were part of the proceedings.
WHAT NEXT FOR SPAIN?
The Spanish Federation had also undergone lengthy criticism for sexism and harassment after their women's team won the FIFA Women's World Cup and then-president Luis Rubiales proceeded to kiss forward Jenni Hermoso without her consent. The Federation will be hoping to invite some positive press with their "anti-racism" initiative.
