Quick-strike Trojans win over Fort Bragg
Lower Lake needs only 20 minutes to knock off Fort Bragg in conference match, improves to 3-0
LOWER LAKE >> One week after beating the Willits Wolverines and Clear Lake Cardinals to get their Coastal Mountain Conference wrestling season rolling, the Lower Lake Trojans made quick work of the Fort Bragg Timberwolves in a brief dual meet Wednesday evening at Lower Lake High School.
In a match that took only 20 minutes to complete, Lower Lake beat Fort Bragg 54-12 to improve to 3-0 in the conference standings.
“From 2 ½ hours last week against Willits to 20 minutes this week,” Lower Lake head coach Ed Fuchs said. “None of the matches went past the second round.”
Fort Bragg sent only six wrestlers to the mat and Lower Lake won five of those matches, all by pin — four in the first round. The two quickest matches were Gilberto Orozco’s 39-second pin of his Fort Bragg opponent at 147
pounds, and Bryan Gudino’s 45-second pin at 108 pounds.
Bob Cruz scored an early second-round pin at 122 pounds, Pedro Garrido won by first-round pin at 140 pounds, and Jesse Castellanos won by first-round pin at 162 pounds.
Lower Lake’s only loss in a contested weight division came at 154 pounds where
Skyler Day was pinned in the first round.
All the other weight divisions were decided by either forfeit or double-forfeit. Other than Day’s loss at 154 pounds, the only other points surrendered by the Trojans came in the 285-pound division that Lower Lake forfeited.
“Our goal was not to let them score more than 12 points and we knew we were going to forfeit at heavyweights,” Fuchs said.
And the Trojans came
through.
“They were hungry,” Fuchs said of his wrestlers. “They wanted this to be over as fast as possible.”
Lower Lake’s wrestlers are taking the weekend off before returning to the mat Tuesday for a home conference tri-meet against Cloverdale and Upper Lake beginning at 5:30 p.m. Because it’s the Trojans’ final home meet of the season, the team’s seniors will be recognized during a special ceremony.
