CLHS grapplers beat M’town, Upper Lake

LAKEPORT >> Missing nearly half of their team because of injuries, the Middletown Mustangs barely escaped with a 4033 win over Upper Lake during a Coastal Mountain Conference wrestling tri-meet on Wednesday night in Lakeport.

The understren­gth Mustangs didn’t fare nearly as well in their second dual, falling 60-15 to the Clear Lake Cardinals.

“Clear Lake went from having a small group a year ago to a big group with lots of good wrestlers this year,” Middletown head coach Brian Hunt said. “They’ve got a solid group of kids.”

Middletown’s only winners in contested weight classes against Clear Lake were Anthony Nudy by first-round pin at 160 pounds, Xander Romero by technical fall at 113 pounds, and Filemon Sanchez by major decision at 126 pounds.

Against Upper Lake, the Mustangs won only three of seven

contested weight classes but picked up enough forfeit points to beat the Cougars. The dual was 34-33 in Middletown’s favor going to the final match of the night at 152 pounds where Jackson Bomberry pinned Mallory Henry to secure the team victory for the Mustangs.

Middletown’s other winners were Romero by major decision over Dylan Slater at 120 pounds and Joziah Pyzer by pin over Robby Harper at 145 pounds.

Upper Lake winners were Tatum Salas by pin over Kamilah Chairez at 113 pounds; Rene Diaz by pin over Sanchez at 126 pounds; Dena Loans Arrow by pin over Parker Boden at 132 pounds; and Cody Banks by pin over Ruben Cortez at 138 pounds. Middletown is now 3-1 in CMC action.

Clear Lake beat Upper Lake 48-24 in the late dual to square its conference record at 2-2. Upper Lake is 1-3. Upper Lake winners in contested matches were Tatum Salas at 106 pounds, Cody Banks at 138 pounds, and Bradley Sneathen at 220 pounds.

Clear Lake individual match results were not reported.
