K’ville anglers place in Wild West tourney
Lyndall finishes just out of the money in amateur division
LAKE SHASTA >> Payton Lyndall and Nathan Phillips, both of Kelseyville, were among the fishermen competing in the Wild West Bass Trail Super Clean Showdown Pro-Am tournament last week on Lake Shasta.
Lyndall, a 16-year-old Kelseyville High School student and a member of the Lake County Fishing Club, reeled in 6.24 pounds on the first day of the tournament and 7.27 pounds on the second day to finish with 13.51 pounds overall, good for 68th place out of the 155 amateurs entered. He missed placing in the money by just 1.42 pounds.
One of only three 16-year-olds taking part in the tournament, Lyndall was featured in a Wild West Bass Trail video that can be viewed online.
Competing in the pro division was Kelseyville High School graduate Phillips, who is now the captain of the bass fishing team at Simpson College in Redding. A last-minute entry, Phillips didn’t have much time to pre-fish for the tournament.
He caught 6.93 pounds on day one and 6.81 on day two for a total of 13.74, which placed him 120th out of 157 pros.
A baseball standout for the Knights during his high school playing days, Phillips landed a bass fishing scholarship to Simpson College after several top finishes as a member of the Lake County Fishing Club.
“We are so proud of both anglers and want them to know that Lake County Fishing Club, Kelseyville HIgh and all of Lake County are wishing them the best in following their dreams,” said Deanna Goff of the Lake County Fishing Club.
