Mustangs squad moves on

Entire Middletown team now advances to sectional playoffs

-

MIDDLETOWN >> Middletown High School's entire golf team will participate in the North Coast Section playoffs Monday at Valley of the Moon Golf Club in Santa Rosa after the Mustangs received an at-large berth into the competition.

Middletown finished a close second to Coastal Mountain Conference South champion St. Helena this year and four of the team's golfers — Cooper Johnson, Luke Hoogendoorn, Jaden Reese and Dom Williams — were awarded at-large berths into the playoffs. However, the section rewarded the Mustangs with one of a handful of at-large berths granted late Wednesday, so the entire squad gets to participate in Santa Rosa at Valley of the Moon, formerly Oakmont West, on Monday.

As a result of Middletown receiving an at-large berth, Credo High School golfers Luke Gruendle and Gavin Whitright qualify out of the CMC South as at-large golfers for Monday's competition and will be joined by Technology's Sebastian Maurice.

CMC South champion Clear Lake also is participating in Monday's competition where the low 18 scorers advance to the Tournament of Champions the following Monday at Lone Tree Golf and Event Center in Antioch. The top three teams also will be recognized.

Kelseyville High School head coach John Berry, who just completed his 40th season at the school, is the tournament director for the sectional tournament. Fans are invited to attend and golf carts are available to rent. Souvenirs such as T-shirts and other items also will be on sale.

The Nor Cal Regionals (May 23) and CIF State Championships (June 1) follow the sectionals on Monday and the Tournament of Champions on May 16.
