Weather finally helping fishermen

Forecast for warmer temperatures in coming days should do the trick

-

From all indications it appears the weather is finally going to cooperate with the fishermen at Clear Lake. A forecast for temperatures in the 80-degree range, perhaps even into the low 90s, should push the bass onto their spawning beds.

The bass will be spawning through July. The big factor is the water temperature. To spawn the water temperature must be in the high 60s.

American Bass (ABA) is holding a tournament Saturday out of Library Park in Lakeport. The weigh-in starts at 3 p.m. A field of approximately 60 boats is expected.

Overall the bass fishing has been slow. Most fishermen are happy to catch two or three fish. That should all change as the water warms up and the tules begin to grow, which provides cover for the fish.

In addition to the ABA tournament, there will be several major bass tournaments in the coming months. During the summer months the tournaments are limited to six hours so as to protect bass when the water gets too warm. When bass are kept in a boat’s livewell too long they can suffer damage and even die. The Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) limits the time they can be kept in the livewell.

Recreational fishermen are starting to show up at the boat ramps. If the trend continutes, it could be a busy summer around the lake.

Catfish derby

The three top fish for local anglers are the bass, crappie and catfish. The Clearlake Oaks / Glenhaven annual catfish derby gets under way May 19 and runs through May 21. Approximately 800 fishermen are expected to compete, making it one of the largest catfish derbies in the country. Fishermen can enter through May 18.

A number of catfish weighing more than 20 pounds are being caught at Clear Lake. It will likely take at least a 25-pounder to win the derby. In fact, it is possible that even a 30-pounder could take the top prize. There also will be all kinds of entertainment at the weigh-in, which takes place at the firehouse in Clearlake Oaks.

Picnic paradise

Now is the time to plan a picnic at one of the parks bordering the lake. Clear Lake State Park and Lakeside County Park are two perfect choices. Be sure and take a camera because the wild birds are everywhere.

Trout

Trout are being caught in Upper Blue Lake and on the Russian River. Both bodies of water were recently stocked.

Hiking

The Mendocino Nation Forest offers dozens of great hiking trails and a trip to Lake Pillsbury will give you a chance to view the tule elk herd.

Now is also a good time to plan a trip up to Mount Konocti

Wildlife

Seeing wildlife is common throughout the county. This past week there was a mountain lion spotted in Lakeport. A resident spotted the lion in his backyard. Last week a bear was also seen within the city limits of Lakeport.
