Middletown prevails on Cobb Mountain

- By John Berry

The Middletown High School golf team started its 2024 campaign by romping to victory in the inaugural 2024 Coastal Mountain Conference tournament at Adams Springs Golf Course on Cobb Mountain this past Thursday. Middletown was the class of the league in 2023 and nothing seemingly has changed from one year ago this time as the same lineup prevailed over the other four teams in their league. Against St. Helena, Technology, Sonoma Academy, and Kelseyville high schools, the golfing Mustangs shot a team score of 349 (low four scores) to beat out second place team St. Helena by 36 strokes.

Dom Williams led the way over the entire 30 golfer field with a +8 over par score of 76. Williams, a two time all-conference golfer, was the only player to shoot in the 70s. His teammate, Cooper Johnson, also an all-conference golfer and the two time Like County Junior Golf champion, had the second low score of the day with an

85. Blake Costlow carded a 92 while newcomer Chris Klingler rounded out the top four for MHS with a 96.

St. Helena finished second in the season opener. Last year the Saints had a strong unit that was good enough to qualify to the North Coast Section playoffs as an at-large team and this year's version appears to be just as good. A pair of all-conference golfers led the way for St. Helena as Micha Meraz Ha posted a 90 while teammate Ethan Peterson shot

91. Piper Pike and Jack Robinson both turned in scores of 97. The St. Helena team total was 385.

Technology High School of Rohnert Park finished in third place with a team total of 412. Three time all-conference golfer Sebastian Maurice led the way with a score of 87. Sonoma Academy is a new-comer to the Coastal Mountain Conference this year and they were led by Eli Golfdberg who shot an 88. Sonoma Academy posted a team score of 424. Kelseyville High School recorded a team total of 436 as Adam Astrup led the Knights with a score of 102. Caleb Lopez and Nate Sherman each shot 109 while Ethan Gambill posted a 116.

After one week of tournament play, Middletown leads the CMC with a 4-0 record followed by St. Helena at 3-1, Technology at 2-2, Sonoma Academy at 1-3, and Kelseyville at 0-4. The CMC hosts eight league tournaments over a two month period of time with the eventual league champions claiming a spot in the North Coast Section playoffs alongside the league's five low individuals who are not on the first place team. The first round of the playoffs will be held at the Peacock Gap Golf Course in San Rafael on Monday, May 6th. The next Coastal Mountain Conference league tournament is Thursday, March 21st at the Sugarloaf Golf Course at the 36 hole Oakmont complex in Santa Rosa's Valley of the Moon.
