Reyes reunited with Mets, expected to fill utility role
The New York Mets signed shortstop Jose Reyes to a minor league contract on Saturday, creating a reunion with the team’s former star who must overcome a suspension for domestic violence.
Reyes, 33, played primarily at shortstop for the Mets from 2003 to 2011 but might be used in a utility role in his return.
General manager Sandy Alderson said Reyes will play third base in his first minor league game with Class-A Brooklyn on Sunday.
Alderson said Reyes also will work in the outfield.
Mets manager Terry Collins said the four-time All-Star will hit leadoff when he joins the team.
BRAVES — Atlanta optioned rookie right-hander Aaron Blair to Triple-A Gwinnett and recalled lefthander Matt Marksberry.
Blair, 24, a Spring Valley High School product, allowed eight runs in 4 1/3 innings in Friday’s 8-6 loss to the New York Mets.
Blair’s ERA climbed to 7.99 as he allowed at least six runs for the third time in five June starts.
YANKEES — New York activated Mark Teixeira from the 15-day disabled list and designated fellow first baseman Ike Davis for assignment.
Teixeira, 36, had been sidelined since June 3 with torn cartilage in his right knee.
Davis, 29, who went 3-for-14 in seven games with the Yankees, said if he clears waivers and doesn’t land a big league job, he would be open to going to the minors with New York.
DODGERS — Los Angeles recalled shortstop Chris Taylor from Triple-A Oklahoma City and designated right-hander Nick Tepesch for assignment.
Taylor, 25, who will be used in a utility role, was acquired in a June 19 trade with Seattle.
