Panik records hat trick for Chicago in team’s first win

CHICAGO — Richard Panik came through big to help the Chicago Blackhawks get their first win of the season.

Panik scored three goals for his first NHL hat trick, Scott Darling was sharp in making 33 saves and Chicago hung on for a 5-3 victory over the Nashville Predators on Saturday.

“(Panik) had a great game,” coach Joel Quennevill­e said. “He did a lot of good things. … He’s got ability offensivel­y. He does some nice things with the puck. He’s got some finish.”

Panik scored his first goal midway through the first period to cap a Blackhawks blitz that put them ahead 3-0. Then, he scored twice in the third period, each time after the Predators had closed to within a goal.

Avalanche 6, Stars 5 — At Denver, Joe Colborne had three goals for his first NHL hat trick and Colorado withstood a 6-on-4 opportunit­y over final 46 seconds.

Penguins 3, Ducks 2 — At Pittsburgh, Phil Kessel’s power-play goal in the second-period stood as the game-winner as Pittsburgh won its fourth straight home game against Anaheim. Ian Cole and Conor Sheary also scored for the Penguins.

Blues 3, Rangers 2 — At St. Louis, Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and an assist, Carter Hutton stopped 33 shots and St. Louis has opened a season with three straight wins for the fourth time. Tarasenko has three goals in three games for the Blues.

Coyotes 4, Flyers 3, OT — At Glendale, Ariz., Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored at 1:48 of overtime and Arizona kicked off its 20th season in the desert with a victory.

Capitals 2, Islanders 1 — At Washington, fourth-line grinder Daniel Winnik scored two goals and Vezina Trophy winner Braden Holtby made 21 saves as Washington won its home opener.

Lightning 3, Devils 2 — At Tampa, Fla., Valtteri Filppula scored the goahead goal on a nifty redirectio­n early in the third period and Tampa Bay earned its second comeback win in two games.

Sharks 3, Blue Jackets 2 — At Columbus, Ohio, Mikkel Boedker and Joel Ward scored for an early lead and Patrick Marleau had a power-play goal to back Martin Jones, who made 26 saves for San Jose.

Panthers 4, Red Wings 1 — At Sunrise, Fla., Colton Sceviour scored his first goal for Florida and Aleksander Barkov added his second goal of the season to lead the Panthers to their second straight win. Jonathan Marchessau­lt also scored a goal for Florida.

Wild 4, Jets 3 — At St. Paul, Minn., Eric Staal and Chris Stewart each got their first goal with Minnesota since being acquired in the offseason, helping the Wild overcome a two-goal deficit.

Maple Leafs 4, Bruins 1 — At Toronto, rookies Mitch Marner and Connor Brown scored, helping the Toronto earn its first win of the season.

Senators 4, Canadiens 3, SO — At Ottawa, Ontario, Erik Karlsson scored the winner in the shootout to help Ottawa win its second straight to open the season.

Canucks 2, Flames 1, SO — At Vancouver, British Columbia, Brandon Sutter scored a shootout goal to give Vancouver its first point of the season.
