Nadal halts drought against Djokovic, makes Madrid final
Rafael Nadal ended his seven-match winless streak against Novak Djokovic with a 6-2, 6-4 victory that put him in the Madrid Open final again.
It was the 50th meeting between the two players, with Djokovic ahead 26-24.
Nadal, who has won Madrid titles in 2005, 2010, 2013 and 2014, will face ninth-ranked Dominic Thiem of Austria in the final.
On the women’s side, Simona Halep of Romania won her second straight Madrid title by defeating Kristina Mladenovic of France 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-2, becoming the first player to successfully defend the title since Serena Williams in 2013.
■ Hockey: At Cologne, Germany, Switzerland rallied from a two-goal deficit to end two-time defending champion Canada’s unbeaten start to the International Ice Hockey Federation world championship with a 3-2 win. Earlier, the United States erased a two-goal deficit to down Latvia 5-3.
■ College football: Colorado State starting safety Braylin Scott was charged with felony theft and burglary on allegations that he stole Rolex watches and diamond bracelets from teammate Hunter Donnelly and then tried to sell some of the items online.
■ Basketball: At Los Angeles, reigning league MVP Nneka Ogwumike scored 23 points as the Los Angeles Sparks opened defense of their WNBA title with a 78-68 victory over the Seattle Storm.
