JAMES N. ULLOM

-

The Las Vegas Valley has lost a loving and genuine native. James Norman Ullom was born May 5, 1942 to George and Phyllis Ullom. Growing up in the city of Henderson, Jim was a middle child alongside his older sister, Leslie and younger brother, Joe. Born and raised in the Battle Born state, all three siblings grew to have blessed lives with wonderful and loving families of their own. Jim attended Basic High School graduating in 1960 and joined the United States Army being stationed at Fort Bliss with the 833rd Ordnance Company. While at Fort Bliss, Jim was given a recommendation from Nevada Democratic United States Senator Howard Cannon. This was to attend Military Prep School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia in order to try and attend the prestigious West Point Military School. He was ultimately cut during the final testing week and transferred to the 1st Battle Group 3rd Infantry Division where the Tomb of the Unknown Solider lies at Fort Myer, Virginia and stayed for the remainder of his service. He was given an Honorable Discharge from the Army in 1963. After leaving the Army, Jim eventually hired on with the Las Vegas Sheriff's Department as a Deputy in September 1964. Jim was a Deputy for three years and then went to the Detective Bureau. He transitioned over to Burglary and then over to Vice. In April 1969, Jim married the love of his life, Patricia Hedahl. He then made Sgt. in August 1969 and stayed in that position for 7 years. In December 1972, Jim got elected as an Assemblyman in Las Vegas and started his career as a politician in January 1973. Although he was only an Assemblyman for two years his aspirations in politics stayed with him for the rest of his life, supporting future legislation with the state. While being employed in law enforcement, the Sheriff's Office merged with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Jim worked for Las Vegas Metro as a Sgt. and took the Lieutenant's test, being 3rd in line for the new position. While waiting for the chance to become Lieutenant, Jim and Pat were both offered positions to work for EG&G in Idaho Falls. They decided to pack up and leave Las Vegas to work for the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory with EG&G in September 1976. During their time in Idaho Falls, they were blessed with having two sons. Steven Kaj Ullom was born in May 1980 and John Paul Ullom born in September 1984. They lived in Idaho until December 1986. Upon his return to Las Vegas, Jim decided to work in the Real Estate business. He started working for Coldwell Banker in 1987, where he stayed until December 1992. In January 1993, Jim took a position in the District Attorney's Office as an Investigator. He worked for the DA's office for 15 years where he later retired in March 2008. Jim and Pat became members of Community Lutheran Church and they have been loyal and proud members since 1988. Jim had the honor at one time of being on the Board and being the Congregation President of his church. He was a man of God and always believed in a simple motto, "TREAT OTHERS HOW YOU WANT TO BE TREATED AND NEVER EVER GIVE UP."Jim was a loving husband and father who never stopped nurturing, mentoring and providing for his family and friends. Jim left us on June 3, 2018 for one final task given to him by his Lord and Savior: To be with and comfort those who have waited anxiously to see him, to help guide and watch over those who long for his presence, and to greet those with open arms who come to be with him in a new life. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Patricia, his two sons, Steven & John, his daughter-in-law Randi Mae Ullom and his grandson Kaj James Ullom (who is named after his grandpa), his soon-to-be grandson Riley Coy Ullom, his brother Joe Ullom and family, his sister Leslie Walker and family, and brother-inlaw Tim Hedahl and family. Jim will be missed but never forgotten! Funeral Services will be held on June 23, 2018, 11:00am at Community Lutheran Church, 3720 E. Tropicana Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89121.
