■ No. 11 Penn State 63, Kent State 10 —

At State College, Pa., Trace McSorley threw for 229 yards and two touchdowns and ran for three scores, setting a program record with the Nittany Lions (3-0) with 24 rushing TDs by a quarterbac­k. The Golden Flashes (1-2) trailed 28-10 at halftime.

■ No. 19 Michigan 45, Southern Methodist 20 —

At Ann Arbor, Mich., Shea Patterson threw touchdown passes of 35, 7 and 41 yards to Donovan Peoples-Jones for the Wolverines (2-1), matching the TD total scored by Michigan wide receivers last season. Safety Josh Metellus returned an intercepti­on by the Mustangs (0-3) 73 yards for a TD.

■ Temple 35, Maryland 14—

At College Park, Md., Ryquell Armstead ran for 118 yards, and linebacker Shaun Bradley returned an intercepti­on 78 yards for a touchdown for the Owls (1-2). The Terrapins (2-1), who had averaged 486 yards of offense per game, mustered 195 and scored their TDs on returns of an intercepti­on and a blocked punt.

■ Troy 24, Nebraska 19 —

At Lincoln, Neb., Cedarius Rookard returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown, and B.J. Smith scored on a 26-yard run in the fourth quarter for the Trojans (2-1), who led 17-0 in the second quarter. The Cornhusker­s are 0-2 for the first time since 1957 and have lost six straight home games.

■ Minnesota 26, Miami (Ohio) 3 —

At Minneapoli­s, Bryce Williams ran for 141 yards for the Golden Gophers (3-0), and fellow freshman Zack Annexstad threw two touchdown passes. The RedHawks (0-3) lost three offensive starters to injury in the first half, including their top two receivers.

■ Akron 39, Northweste­rn 34—

At Evanston, Ill., cornerback Alvin Davis returned intercepti­ons 97 and 50 yards for touchdowns for the Zips (2-0), who trailed 21-3 at halftime. Clayton Thorson threw for 383 yards and three TDs for the Wildcats (1-2) but threw the two pivotal intercepti­ons and lost a fumble that resulted in an Akron score.

■ Indiana 38, Ball State 10—

At Bloomingto­n, Ind., freshman Stevie Scott ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries for the Hoosiers (3-0), who have won six straight regular-season nonconfere­nce games. James Gilbert ran for 89 yards and a TD on 16 carries for the Cardinals (1-2).

■ South Florida 25, Illinois 19—

At Chicago, Blake Barnett threw two fourthquar­ter touchdown passes to Darnell Salomon for the Bulls (3-0), who overcame a 12-point deficit in the final period. The Illini (2-1) played a home game at Soldier Field for the fourth time.

■ Missouri 40, Purdue 37—

At West Lafayette, Ind., Tucker McCann kicked four field goals, including a 25-yarder as time expired, for the Tigers (3-0), who overcame David Blough’s program-record 572 yards passing for the Boilermake­rs (0-3). Purdue is off to its worst start since 1996.

■ Iowa 38, Northern Iowa 14—

At Iowa City, Iowa, Nathan Stanley was 23 of 28 passing for 309 yards and two touchdowns for the Hawkeyes (3-0), who held the Panthers (0-2) to 228 yards of offense, including 6 rushing.
