Penguins’ power-play goal in OT sinks Kings

PITTSBURGH —

Phil Kessel scored a power-play goal at 3:59 of overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

Evgeni Malkin pushed a loose puck from the slot to Kessel, and he finished near the side of the net for the Penguins’ fifth victory in seven games.

Tanner Pearson scored against his former team, and Matt Cullen and Bryan Rust also had goals for the Penguins. Matt Murray made 38 saves for his first victory since Oct. 25.

Murray stopped Tyler Toffoli’s breakaway in the first 30 seconds of overtime. The goalie also denied a quality overtime chance from Jake Muzzin in the slot.

At Washington, Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-best 29th goal of the season to extend his points streak to a

career-best 14 games and added the shootout winner. Ovechkin has 17 goals and six assists during his points streak and has scored in six straight.

At Denver, Gabriel Landeskog scored twice, including the decisive goal with 3:20 left, and Mikko Rantanen added two power-play goals for Colorado, which recovered after blowing a three-goal lead. Tyler Seguin scored twice for Dallas.

At Vancouver, British Columbia, Brock Boeser had a goal and an assist to back Jacob Markstrom, who had 31 saves, as Vancouver won for the fourth time in five games and handed Philadelph­ia its fourth loss in a row.

At Sunrise, Fla., Aleksander Barkov scored with 1:36 left in overtime to cap his first NHL hat trick and back Roberto Luongo, who had 29 saves.

At St. Paul, Minn., Matthew Tkachuk scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period to back David Rittich, who stopped 34 shots. Calgary is 11-2-1 in its past 14 games.

At Nashville, Tenn., Ryan Johansen scored the winning goal in the sixth shootout round to back Juuse Saros, who had 33 saves through overtime, as Nashville won its third in a row.

■ Ducks 2, Blue Jackets 1, OT —

At Columbus, Ohio, Daniel Sprong scored 1:19 into overtime in support of John Gibson, who stopped 36 shots, as Anaheim won its fourth straight and eighth in nine games.

■ Islanders 4, Red Wings 3, SO —

At Uniondale, N.Y., Mathew Barzal scored on a third-period power play and had the lone shootout goal. Thomas Vanek had a goal and two assists for Detroit.
