A robbery attempt at a jewelry store ended with an employee fatally shooting a suspect Saturday evening in the central Las Vegas Valley, police said.

Officers were called about 5 p.m. after two men armed with handguns attempted to rob a jewelry store in a shopping center near Sahara Avenue and Maryland Parkway, Metropolitan Police Department homicide Lt. Ray Spencer said at a Saturday night press briefing.

An employee of the store, John Fish Jewelers, exchanged gunfire with the suspects, fatally shooting one of the men.

The employee was shot at least once, and he was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in critical condition, Spencer said. The employee had a concealed carry permit, Spencer said.

A customer, also was struck during the gunfire, was hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries, Spencer said. The male suspect who was shot multiple times died at the scene.

The second suspect, who was wearing dark clothes, was last seen running through the parking lot, Spencer said. Police had not located him Saturday night.

Police do not believe the man stole anything from the store.

Less than an hour earlier, Metro detectives were called to an unrelated homicide near Flamingo Road and Decatur Boulevard.

A manicurist was killed outside of a nail salon Saturday afternoon after a customer driving a rental car allegedly ran her over while trying to leave the business without paying, police said.

Officers were called at about 4:30 p.m. to a nail salon at the corner of Flamingo Road and Decatur Boulevard, Spencer said.

A woman in her mid 20s is suspected of driving a vehicle over the manicurist after her credit card was declined at the salon, police said.

After the card was declined, the woman “went to her car to get money, is what she said, and then she attempted to leave,” Spencer said.

The manicurist and her husband, who also works at the nail salon, tried to stop the woman from leaving.

The manicurist stood in front of the woman’s car, but the suspect allegedly “drove over her and dragged her about 50 feet,” Spencer said. The woman was taken to University Medical Center, where she died.
