Trump to Dems: Return to D.C., help end shutdown
In a series of tweets, President Donald Trump pushed back against the notion that he doesn’t have a strategy to end the partial government shutdown.
“Elections have consequences!” he declared, meaning the 2016 election, in which he “promised safety and security.”
Trump threatened anew that the shutdown, already the longest in U.S. history, could continue indefinitely.
“Democrats should come back to Washington and work to end the Shutdown, while at the same time ending the horrible humanitarian crisis at our Southern Border,” he tweeted. “I am in the White House waiting for you!”
Trump said he will sign legislation passed by Congress to provide back pay for some 800,000 federal workers who aren’t being paid during the shutdown.
