No. 1 Duke recovers, gives No. 4 Virginia first setback

DURHAM, N.C. — R.J. Barrett scored 30 points to lead No. 1 Duke past No. 4 Virginia 72-70 on Saturday to give the Cavaliers their first loss of the season.

Zion Williamson added 27 points for the Blue Devils (15-2, 4-1 Atlantic Coast), who bounced back from an overtime loss to Syracuse that could cost them their top ranking. They avoided their first two-game skid at home since 2016 and proved they can win without injured point guard Tre Jones.

DeAndre Hunter scored 18 points, and Ty Jerome and Kyle Guy had 14 apiece for the Cavaliers (16-1, 4-1), who entered as the nation’s last unbeaten after No. 2 Michigan was upset at Wisconsin earlier in the day.

The fourth matchup of top-ranked teams in the sport’s history — Virginia entered at No. 1 in the coaches’ poll — was a tournament caliber game throughout. There were 14 ties and 15 lead changes, and it was a onepossess­ion game for a 14½-minute stretch of the second half.

■ Wisconsin 64, No. 2 Michigan 54 — At Madison, Wis., Ethan Happ had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Badgers (12-6, 4-3 Big Ten), who scored the final seven points in the last minute to hold off the Wolverines (17-1, 6-1).

■ No. 3 Tennessee 71, Alabama 68 — At Knoxville, Tenn., Grant Williams scored 21 points for the Volunteers (161, 5-0 Southeaste­rn), who rallied after blowing a 15-point lead and won their 12th straight. John Petty scored 30 points for the Crimson Tide (11-6, 2-3).

■ West Virginia 65, No. 7 Kansas 64— At Morgantown, W.Va., Jermaine Haley hit a layup with 8.5 seconds left for the Mountainee­rs (9-9, 1-5 Big 12), who scored the final seven points and halted a five-game slide. The biggest lead for the Jayhawks (15-3, 4-2) was 64-58 with 2:34 left.

■ Baylor 73, No. 8 Texas Tech 62 — At Waco, Texas, freshman Jared Butler scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half for the Bears (11-6, 3-2 Big 12), who dealt the Red Raiders (15-3, 4-2) their second loss in four days.

■ No. 12 Kentucky 82, No. 14 Auburn 80— At Auburn, Ala., Tyler Herro made two free throws with 24 seconds left to help the Wildcats (14-3, 4-1 SEC) rebound after the Tigers (13-4, 2-2) rallied from a 17-point second-half deficit.

■ No. 17 North Carolina State 77, Notre Dame 73 — At South Bend, Ind., C.J. Bryce scored 23 points for the Wolfpack (15-3, 3-2 ACC), who turned back several late charges from the Fighting Irish (11-7, 1-4).

■ Texas 75, No. 20 Oklahoma 72 — At Austin, Texas, Kerwin Roach II had 23 points to lead four scorers in double figures for the Longhorns (11-7, 3-3 Big 12), who ended a three-game skid. Christian James scored 20 points for the Sooners (13-5, 2-4).

■ Purdue 70, No. 25 Indiana 55 — At West Lafayette, Ind., Carsen Edwards scored 20 points for the Boilermake­rs (12-6, 5-2 Big Ten), who shut down the star freshman of the Hoosiers (12-6, 3-4), with Romeo Langford mustering four points on 2-for-10 shooting.

MOUNTAIN WEST

■ No. 10 UNR 67, Air Force 52 — At Reno, Jordan Caroline scored 19 points for the Wolf Pack (18-1, 5-1), who missed 22 of 27 3-point attempts but forced 21 turnovers. The Falcons (7-11, 2-4) held UNR to 20 first-half points, its fewest since Eric Musselman started coaching the team in 2015.

■ Fresno State 63, Boise State 53 — At Boise, Idaho, Deshon Taylor scored all of his 15 points in the second half for the Bulldogs (13-4, 4-1), who trailed by six at intermissi­on. No one had more than four rebounds for the Broncos (8-10, 3-2), who were outrebound­ed 33-25.

■ Utah State 87, Colorado State 72 — At Logan, Utah, Neemias Queta had 18 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for the Aggies (14-5, 4-2), who never trailed. J.D. Paige scored 17 points for the Rams (7-11, 2-3).

■ New Mexico 83, Wyoming 53 — At Albuquerqu­e, N.M., Carlton Bragg had 16 points to lead six scorers in double figures for the Lobos (9-9, 3-3), who held the Cowboys (4-14, 0-5) to 35 percent shooting.
