Son killed father, wounded mother, police say
Official says quarrel occurred at gathering
A son fatally shot his father and wounded his mother Saturday afternoon during a family cookout in the south Las Vegas Valley, police said.
About 1:05 p.m., multiple family members in the house called 911 to report the shooting at a home on the 4300 block of Garland Court, near Rochelle and Eastern avenues, Metropolitan Police Department homicide Lt. Ray Spencer said. Officers found a man in his 70s and a woman in her late 50s who both had been shot multiple times.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where she underwent surgery Saturday afternoon, Spencer said outside the scene.
The shooting happened when the son, a man in his 30s, got into an argument at the family gathering where at least five people were at the home, including a child, Spencer said. The father took the son into the home’s garage to calm him, and the son then shot his father and mother, Spencer said.
The other family members ran upstairs and called 911, he said.
“We don’t believe at this point there was a hostage situation,” Spencer said, adding that officers were able to get into the home “pretty quick” to find the two gunshot victims.
Police took the son into custody and interviewed him. He was not injured, Spencer said.
He said the son lived at the home with his parents.
Spencer said that those experiencing domestic violence should seek help, such as Metro’s Family Justice Center, to prevent violent situations.
“Especially with everybody being quarantined inside their house, it can be very stressful,” he said.
He added that “there are many community resources out there that would be glad to help somebody going through a stressful time to prevent a situation that we’re out here talking about today.”
More information about the shooting was unavailable.
