Cancer survivor delivers in victory by No. 4 Texas

Crucial 3-pointer punctuates Jones’ dour anniversar­y

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Three years to the day since Texas coach Shaka Smart told his players Andrew Jones had been diagnosed with leukemia, the junior guard put his latest stamp on what is becoming a special Longhorns season.

Jones hit a 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left and totaled 16 points to lift the fourth-ranked Longhorns past No. 14 West Virginia 72-70 on Saturday.

Courtney Ramey drove into the lane before tossing the ball to Jones after Emmitt Matthews missed two free throws with 11 seconds left for the Mountainee­rs (9-4, 2-3 Big 12).

After his leukemia diagnosis, Jones missed most of the next two seasons and completed his cancer treatments in September 2019. On Saturday, he eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career with Texas (10-1, 4-0).

■ No. 1 Gonzaga 116, Portland 88: At Portland, Ore., Joel Ayayi had 12 points, 14 assists and 13 rebounds in the first triple-double for the Bulldogs (120, 3-0 West Coast), who buried the Pilots (6-5, 0-2) in their first true road game of the season.

■ No. 2 Baylor 67, Texas Christian 49: At Fort Worth, Texas, Jared Butler scored 28 points for the Bears (11-0, 4-0 Big 12), who trailed at halftime for the first time this season. Mike Miles scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half, with his 65-foot shot at the halftime buzzer putting the Horned Frogs (9-4, 2-3) up 28-27.

■ No. 6 Kansas 63, Oklahoma 59: At Lawrence, Kan., David McCormack hit a clinching hook shot with 12.8 seconds left and totaled 17 points for the Jayhawks (11-2, 4-1 Big 12). Austin Reaves had 20 points for the Sooners (6-4, 2-3).

Ohio State 79, No. 15 Rutgers 68:

At Piscataway, N.J., Duane Washington Jr. scored 17 points for the Buckeyes (9-3, 3-3 Big Ten), who dealt the Scarlet

Knights (7-4, 3-4) their third straight loss.

■ No. 17 Oregon 79, Utah 73: At Salt Lake City, Chris Duarte

scored 25 points for the Ducks (9-2, 4-1 Pac-12), who beat the Utes (4-4, 1-3) for the 18th time in the teams’ past 20 meetings.

■ No. 21 Duke 79, Wake Forest 68: At Durham, N.C., Matthew Hurt scored 26 points for the Blue Devils (5-2, 3-0 Atlantic Coast), who held a 35-25 rebounding edge over the Demon Deacons (3-3, 0-3).

MOUNTAIN WEST San Diego State 69, UNR

67: At San Diego, Trey Pulliam hit a running bank shot at the buzzer for the Aztecs (9-2, 3-1) after the Wolf Pack (8-5, 3-3) had tied it on Grant Sherfield’s 3-pointer with six seconds left. Sherfield had 20 points.

WOMEN Colorado State 67, UNLV

58: At Cox Pavilion, McKenna Hofschild scored 24 points for the Rams (8-2, 4-2 Mountain West), who held the Lady Rebels (4-5, 2-2) to 34.3-percent shooting. Keyana Wilfred had 15 points to lead four double-figure scorers for UNLV.

■ No. 3 Connecticu­t 87, Providence 50: At Storrs, Conn., Paige Bueckers scored 23 points for the Huskies (7-0, 6-0 Big East), who routed the Friars (5-7, 3-4) to give coach Geno Auriemma his 1,098th win, tying him with Pat Summitt for the second most in Division I women’s history.
