Schalke teen first American to post Bundesliga hat trick

Teenager Matthew Hoppe became the first United States player to record a hat trick in Germany’s top division, netting three goals to send Schalke past Hoffenheim 4-0 in Gelsenkirc­hen, Germany. The 19-year-old from Yorba Linda, California, was playing his fifth Bundesliga match for Schalke, which had a 30-match winless streak dating to Jan. 17. The longest winless run in Germany’s top flight was 31 matches, set by Tasmania Berlin in 1965 and 1966.

■ Skiing: At Adelboden, Switzerlan­d, Alexis Pinturault won a World Cup giant slalom for a second straight day for his 33rd World Cup victory, matching American great Bode Miller for ninth on the men’s all-time list. The 29-year-old Frenchman won by 1.26 seconds over runner-up Filip Zubcic of Croatia.

■ College football: Quarterbac­k Jarrett Guarantano will transfer to Washington State from Tennessee, where he started seven games in 2020 and 32 in his career, completing 61.1 percent of his passes for 6,174 yards with 38 TDs and 17 intercepti­ons.
