Schalke teen first American to post Bundesliga hat trick

Teenager Matthew Hoppe became the first United States player to record a hat trick in Germany’s top division, netting three goals to send Schalke past Hoffenheim 4-0 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The 19-year-old from Yorba Linda, California, was playing his fifth Bundesliga match for Schalke, which had a 30-match winless streak dating to Jan. 17. The longest winless run in Germany’s top flight was 31 matches, set by Tasmania Berlin in 1965 and 1966.
