Baseball team opens with twin bill sweep over UNR

Diego Alarcon went 4-for-5 with an RBI and scored the winning run on Eric Bigani’s infield single in the ninth inning, sending UNLV past UNR 3-2 in the Rebels’ Mountain West baseball opener at Wilson Stadium. UNLV swept the doublehead­er with an 8-3 win in the nightcap. Chase Maddux allowed no earned runs over 8 2/3 innings in Game 1 for the Rebels (2-0, 2-0), with a dropped fly ball in the ninth leading to both runs by the Wolf Pack (3-3, 0-2). UNLV reliever Conner Woods pitched four shutout innings with seven strikeouts in Game 2.

■ Men’s swimming: At Buchanan Natatorium, the Rebels increased their lead over second-place Air Force by 185 points after the third day of the four-day, six-team Western Athletic Conference championsh­ips. Bryan Chavez won the 100-yard butterfly (47.34 seconds), Sam Willstrop won the 100 breaststro­ke (53.26 seconds), and they teamed with Panos Bolanos and Reece Hemmens to win the 400 medley relay (3:10.99).

■ Men’s soccer: At Seattle, Bailey Letherman scored in the second minute, and Miguel Duenas Jr. had five saves to help the Rebels tie Seattle 1-1. UNLV (0-1-2) was outshot 18-17. Habib Barry scored in the 84th minute for the Redhawks (2-1-1).

■ Track and field: At Colorado Springs, Colo., sophomore Jonon Young placed second in the long jump with a personalbe­st leap of 20 feet, 3.5 inches in the 21-team Championsh­ips at the Peak.

■ Volleyball: At Cox Pavilion, Mariena Hayden had 16 kills and Shelby Capllonch 13 digs to lead the Rebels (60) to a 25-13, 23-25, 25-15, 25-16 win over Boise State (6-2).
