MICHAEL JOSEPH SMALL
Michael Joseph Small, 61, passed away on August 7, 2021. Mike was born November 2, 1959 in Peru, Indiana. Mike was raised in a military family and traveled many places before arriving in Las Vegas in 1974. He attended Rancho High School and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, where he received a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1982. He became a CPA and began work at Deloitte Haskins & Sells and later moved to O’Bannon Dunn & Small. From 1998 to 2004, Mike was a National Tax Director in the office of Deloitte. He later worked as Vice President of Tax and Treasury for the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. In 2008 he became Vice-President of Global Tax for IGT and then moved to Seagate in 2014 where he was Vice-President Tax and International Trade. Professionally, he served on many boards including as President of the Nevada State Board of Accountancy, Chairman of the Nevada Economic Forum and member of the Silicon Valley Tax Directors Group. Community service included terms on the American Cancer Society, United Way, and American Diabetes Association. Mike was a loving and loved husband, father, brother, papa, uncle, and friend of many. His passions included golf, experiencing new things, travel and health. Mike was a leader and provided many with wise counsel on life. His sense of humor brought joy and a lightness to life. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Small, his mother Shirley Small, and his brother Steven Small. Survivors include his loving wife, Kimberly; his son Joseph and grandchildren, Aiden, Mila and Lucy; daughter Christine (Michael) O’Brien, and grandchildren, Liam and Lauren; brother Mark (Patricia) and sister Michele. The visitation will be held on Sunday, August 15th from 2-6pm. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, August 17th from 6-9pm. Both events will be held at Palm Southwest Mortuary, 7979 W Warm Springs Rd. Las Vegas, NV 89113. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the National Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
