Henley maintains lead at Wyndham

Piercy stays in hunt, buoys playoff hopes

-

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Russell Henley shot 1-under-par 69 on Saturday to take a three-stroke Wyndham Championship lead and move one round away from his first PGA Tour win in four years.

Henley, who tied this year’s lowest 36-hole tour score, didn’t maintain that pace at Sedgefield Country Club. Yet, he rolled in a 33-foot putt for eagle on the par-5 15th and went on to finish at 15-under 195 as he tries to win his fourth title and first since 2017.

Tyler McCumber, a son of 10-time tour winner Mark McCumber, shot a 66 and was at 12 under in second. He’s winless on tour.

The group of six four shots behind at 11 under included three playoff outsiders in Bonanza product Scott Piercy (68), Rory Sabbatini (69) and Roger Sloan (64) now on track to tee it up in the 125-man field for the postseason that starts next week at The Northern Trust.

Piercy was the first man out of the playoffs at No. 126 when the tournament began. But his third straight round in the 60s projected him to 93rd.

Sabbatini, the Olympic silver medalist, began the tournament at No. 141 but has moved to a projected 122. Sloan has jumped from 131st to 102nd.

Others tied at 11 under were Las Vegas resident Kevin Na (67), Branden Grace (64) and Kevin Kisner (66).

Former FedEx Cup champion Justin Rose (69), who started the tournament 138th in the standings, is 126th in the projections.

Henley, who entered at No. 46, was locked into the playoffs long before this event began. He’s focused on finishing out the victory, something he did not two months ago when he was in a three-way tie for the top after three rounds of the U.S. Open. He shot a final-round 76 at Torrey Pines.

■ USGA: At Oakmont, Pa., trailing on the back nine for the first time all week, North Carolina junior Austin Greaser responded by winning four straight holes and closing out Texas junior Travis Vick on the 17th hole in their U.S. Amateur semifinal. Next up is the 36-hole title match against Michigan State senior James Piot, who notched a 4-and-3 victory over North Florida sophomore Nick Gabrelcik.

■ LPGA: At Fife, Scotland, second-round leader Ariya Jutanugarn bogeyed her final two holes for an even-par 72 to tie Charley Hull (69) and Ryann O’Toole (68) atop the Women’s Scottish Open leaderboard at 9-under 207 entering final round. Ashleigh Buhai (67) and Atthaya Thitikul (70) were one shot back. Wind gusted to 28 mph.

■ Champions: At Calgary, Alberta, Doug Barron eagled the par-5 18th and had five birdies in his second straight 6-under 64 for a one-shot lead entering the Shaw Charity Classic’s final round. First-round leader Billy Mayfair (67), Calgary resident Stephen Ames (65) and Steve Flesch (65) were tied for second.

■ European PGA: At Kent, England, Rasmus Hojgaard of Denmark shot a 10-under 62 for a 14-under 202 total to take a three-stroke lead into the Cazoo Classic’s final round. Jordan Smith (70) and Calum Hill (70) were tied for second.
