Unvaccinated Djokovic still hopes to play at U.S. Open

-

Novak Djokovic said he has been training with the intention of being allowed to compete at the U.S. Open despite not being vaccinated against COVID-19. The 35-year-old 21-time major champion is included on the U.S. Open entry list, but the U.S. doesn’t allow unvaccinated noncitizens to enter the country. Djokovic has won three titles at Flushing Meadows. The tournament starts Aug. 29.

■ ITF: At Baku, Azerbaijan, Domenico Vicini became the first player to compete in 100 Davis Cup matches, two days after the 50-year-old from San Marino became the oldest player to win in the event. Vicini, who turns 51 on Sept. 1, teamed with 17-year-old Simone De Luigi in a 6-2, 6-3 doubles loss to Iceland’s Rafn Bonifacius and Daniel Siddall.

■ ATP: At Umag, Croatia, top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz moved to his tour-best sixth final of 2022 by beating 20-yearold qualifier Giulio Zeppieri 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the Croatia Open. Alcaraz, 19, faces second-seeded Jannik Sinner, 20, for the title.

■ ATP: At Kitzbuhel, Austria, thirdseeded Roberto Bautista Agut beat wild card Filip Misolic 6-2, 6-2 in the Generali Open final for the 34-year-old Spaniard’s 11th tour title, second this year and second on clay.

■ WTA: At Prague, Wimbledon quarterfinalist Marie Bouzkova beat 17-year-old Linda Noskova 7-6 (4), 6-3 in an all-czech Prague Open semifinal. Seeded eighth, Bouzkova faces seventhseeded Anastasia Potapova for the title.

■ WTA: At Warsaw, Poland, fifthseeded Caroline Garcia beat 10thseeded Jasmine Paolini 6-1, 6-2 in the Poland Open to advance to her 12th tour final, where the 28-year-old will face first-time finalist Ana Bogdan.
