Unvaccinated Djokovic still hopes to play at U.S. Open
Novak Djokovic said he has been training with the intention of being allowed to compete at the U.S. Open despite not being vaccinated against COVID-19. The 35-year-old 21-time major champion is included on the U.S. Open entry list, but the U.S. doesn’t allow unvaccinated noncitizens to enter the country. Djokovic has won three titles at Flushing Meadows. The tournament starts Aug. 29.
■ ITF: At Baku, Azerbaijan, Domenico Vicini became the first player to compete in 100 Davis Cup matches, two days after the 50-year-old from San Marino became the oldest player to win in the event. Vicini, who turns 51 on Sept. 1, teamed with 17-year-old Simone De Luigi in a 6-2, 6-3 doubles loss to Iceland’s Rafn Bonifacius and Daniel Siddall.
