PAUL GILBERT

1946-2022

-

Paul Gilbert, PH.D., husband, father, grandfather, cousin, brother and friend, passed away on July 2, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Zelda, his daughter, Annie, her fiancé David, his granddaughter Harlowe, and many, many friends and family, all of whom will miss him everyday.

Paul had many careers, beginning with his PH.D. research into the mechanisms of addiction at the Addiction Research Center, then in Lexington, Kentucky. He was especially proud of his work on naloxone (Narcan), which he clearly foresaw as a vital tool in the fight against opiate overdose. Later he went into business with his father Harry, running an executive employment agency in Los Angeles. After selling that business, he joined one of his poker buddies in running a maternity clothing company but finally ended up teaching marketing and Internet marketing at Woodbury University, where he was a special favorite of the students.

Paul and Zelda moved to Henderson, Nevada, to be closer to their daughter and granddaughter. While there, Paul got to enjoy one of his favorite pastimes trying to beat the house at video poker and blackjack. He had a deal with his wife and daughter: they got to split his winnings. When he lost, though, they didn't have to kick back in. He would moan and moan, but the twinkle in his eye gave the game away. And there was giggling all around.

Paul lived with Type I diabetes for close to 50 years until it took him away. His successful management of that disease was due to his own fierce determination and to excellent medical attention from people such as Dr. Michael Bush in Los Angeles and Drs. Reid Litchfield and Russell Neibaur in Henderson. His family is grateful to these and all his other doctors for his care. Those who wish to, may make a donation in Paul's name to the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston (joslin.org).

There will be a memorial/celebration of life event in September. For details, please contact the family.
