Cleveland designates DH Reyes, 27, for assignment

Franmil Reyes, who began the season as Cleveland’s cleanup hitter, was designated for assignment. The 27-yearold designated hitter had been optioned to Triple-a Columbus last week after hitting .213 with nine home runs and 104 strikeouts in 263 at-bats. Reyes hit 37 homers in 2019, splitting the season between Cleveland and San Diego, and had 30 homers and a career-high 85 RBIS in 2021. He is making $4.55 million on a one-year deal and was arbitratio­neligible.

■ Cubs: Shortstop Andrelton Simmons (right shoulder strain) was activated from the injured list and designated for assignment. The 32-yearold four-time Gold Glove winner, who signed a one-year, $4 million deal in March, has been limited to 34 games this season because of injuries.

■ Blue Jays: Four-time All-star center fielder George Springer (inflamed right elbow) was placed on the 10-day IL. The 32-year-old, in the second season of a six-year, $150 million deal, has hit .251 with 18 homers, 49 RBIS and 59 runs in 89 games this season.
