Kyrgios survives six match points for win at Citi Open

Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios fought off six match points in a secondset tiebreaker against hometown favorite Frances Tiafoe and then raced past him in the third set to win 6-7 (5), 7-6 (12), 6-2 in a Citi Open quarterfin­al at Washington. The hard-court U.S. Open tuneup is Kyrgios’ first tournament since he lost in four sets to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. Kyrgios won his most recent ATP title at Washington in 2019.

■ WTA: At Washington, 37th-ranked Kaia Kanepi moved within one win of her first title in nine years, routing Daria Saville 6-3, 6-1 in a Citi Open semifinal. The 37-year-old Estonian won the most recent of her four tour titles in 2013 in Brussels.

■ WTA: At San Jose, Calif., secondseed­ed Paula Badosa beat sixth-seeded Coco Gauff 7-6 (4), 6-2 at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic to reach her fourth semifinal this year.
