Scherzer stars as Mets sweep doublehead­er

NEW YORK — Max Scherzer tied a season high with 11 strikeouts over seven shutout innings as the New York Mets beat Atlanta 6-2 on Saturday to cap a doublehead­er sweep.

Francisco Lindor had three hits and three RBIS as New York took the opener 8-5, and the Mets stretched their National League East lead to 5½ games over the Braves.

Pete Alonso had three singles for New York, including a bases-loaded hit to match Yankees star Aaron Judge for the major league RBI lead with 93. The Mets swept their second doublehead­er against Atlanta this season and opened their biggest division lead since June 21.

Scherzer (8-2) allowed two doubles to Travis d’arnaud among four hits. He produced his fourth scoreless outing this season and third since returning from an oblique injury July 5. Braves starter Max Fried (10-4), a Henderson resident, allowed four runs — two earned — on six hits over six innings in the nightcap.

■ Mariners 2-1, Angels 1-7: At Seattle, Ty France hit a two-run homer to back George Kirby (3-3), who allowed one run while striking out eight over six innings in Game 1. David Fletcher hit a tworun homer and an RBI single in Game 2 to back Reid Detmers (4-4), who allowed one run in seven innings.

■ Giants 7, Athletics 3: At Oakland, Calif., Lamonte Wade Jr. and J.D. Davis homered on consecutiv­e pitches in the sixth to back winner Carlos Rodon (10-6), who allowed one run in 5⅓ innings.

■ Rangers 8, White Sox 0: At Arlington, Texas, Adolis Garcia hit a three-run double and a two-run single to back Dane Dunning (2-6), who shut out his ex-team on one hit over seven innings.

■ Cardinals 1, Yankees 0: At St. Louis, Nolan Arenado hit a two-out RBI single in the first to back Jordan Montgomery (4-3), who shut out his ex-team on two hits over five innings.

■ Royals 5, Red Sox 4: At Kansas City, Mo., Nick Pratto hit a walk-off homer on a full count with two outs in the ninth. UNLV product Kyle Isbel also homered for Kansas City.

■ Phillies 11, Nationals 5: At Philadelph­ia, Rhys Hoskins homered in the first inning for a third straight game, the first Phillies player to do so since at least 1900.

■ Orioles 6, Pirates 3: At Baltimore, pinch hitter Ryan Mckenna had a two-out, two-run double in the fifth for Baltimore, which won its fifth in a row.

■ Twins 7, Blue Jays 3: At Minneapoli­s, Jorge Polanco hit two two-out RBI doubles that scored Luis Arraez, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI, for Minnesota.

■ Guardians 4, Astros 1: At Cleveland, Amed Rosario hit a two-run single in the second to back Cal Quantrill (8-5), who pitched six shutout innings.

■ Dodgers 8, Padres 3: At Los Angeles, Will Smith hit a solo homer, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly and scored on Max Muncy’s three-run homer.

■ Tigers 9, Rays 1: At Detroit, Harold Castro drove in two runs and scored twice to back Garrett Hill (2-3), who allowed one run in 5⅓ innings.

■ Reds 7, Brewers 5: At Milwaukee, Jose Barrero hit a two-run homer and a solo shot, his first major league homers, for Cincinnati.

■ Cubs 4, Marlins 0: At Chicago, P.J. Higgins homered and singled to back Drew Smyly (4-6), who pitched 6⅔ shutout innings.

■ Rockies 3, Diamondbac­ks 2: At Phoenix, Ryan Mcmahon hit a tiebreakin­g solo homer in the Colorado ninth.
