Newgarden rockets into Indycar title contention

Two-time Indycar champion Josef Newgarden won the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 in Madison, Illinois, for his fifth victory this season and third straight on World Wide Technology Raceway’s short oval. Newgarden climbed to second in the standings and trails Team Penske teammate Will Power by three points with two races left. Rookie David Malukas finished a career-best second, passing Scott Mclaughlin on the final lap.

■ NASCAR: At Watkins Glen, N.Y., Kyle Larson zoomed past Ty Gibbs and William Byron when the two leaders made contact with fewer than five laps to go and then held off A.J. Allmending­er to win the Sunoco Go Rewards 200 for his first Xfinity Series road course win. Allmending­er was second, followed by Sammy Smith and Las Vegan Noah Gragson.

■ NHRA: At Brainerd, Minn., defending event champion Matt Hagan topped the Funny Car qualifying field for the Lucas Oil Nationals. Top Fuel points leader Brittany Force also qualified No. 1, as did Kris Thorne in Pro Modified.
