May sharp in season debut with Dodgers

LOS ANGELES — Dustin May dominated for five innings in his return from Tommy John surgery, Will Smith and Justin Turner each hit a three-run homer, and the Los Angeles Dodgers routed Miami 7-0 on Saturday.

In his first big league start since May 2021, May (1-0) allowed one hit, struck out nine and walked two while throwing 71 pitches. The 24-year-old right-hander retired his last 13 batters.

May, who showed exceptiona­l promise in parts of the past three seasons, gave signs he could be a key contributo­r down the stretch and into the playoffs for the team with the majors’ best record.

Freddie Freeman had two hits and an RBI as the Dodgers extended their home win streak to eight games. The Marlins totaled three hits, two by Jon Berti, in their seventh loss in nine games.

Phil Bickford, a College of Southern Nevada product, struck out three while pitching the eighth and ninth for Los Angeles.

■ Blue Jays 5, Yankees 2: At New York, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Alejandro Kirk each hit a two-run double in the fifth for Toronto, which dealt New York its 15th loss in 19 games. The Yankees have lost six straight series for the first time since 1995.

■ Mets 8-1, Phillies 2-4: At Philadelph­ia, Michael Perez broke out of an 0-for-19 slump with a two-run single for New York in Game 1. Bailey Falter (1-3) held the Mets to one run on two hits over six innings in Game 2.

■ Rays 5, Royals 2: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Drew Rasmussen (8-4) took a no-hit bid into the sixth for Tampa Bay in his first start since losing a perfectgam­e bid in the ninth, allowing two runs on two hits in5 ⅔ innings.

■ Braves 5, Astros 4: At Atlanta, Matt Olson’s check-swing double to left brought home the tying run in the 11th, and pinch hitter Travis d’arnaud won it with an RBI single through Houston’s drawnin defense.

■ Reds 10, Pirates 1: At Pittsburgh, Jake Fraley hit a two-run homer in Cincinnati’s four-run fourth, and Justin Dunn (1-1) allowed one run over five innings in his first win in 16 months.

■ Athletics 4, Mariners 3: At Oakland, Calif., Tony Kemp hit a two-run single in Oakland’s threerun fifth and scored the winning run on an error in the 10th.

■ Padres 2, Nationals 1: At San Diego, Juan Soto and Josh Bell homered against their ex-team to back Joe Musgrove, who allowed one run in six innings.

■ Red Sox 4, Orioles 3: At Baltimore, Kike Hernandez hit a two-run homer to back Michael Wacha (8-1), who shut out Baltimore over 5⅔ innings.

■ Rockies 4, Giants 3: At Denver, Brendan Rodgers’ four hits included an RBI double in the Colorado third and a go-ahead RBI single in the 10th.

■ White Sox 2, Guardians 0: At Cleveland, Johnny Cueto (6-5) shut out Cleveland on five hits over 8⅔ innings in his 10th straight quality start.

■ Cubs 6, Brewers 5: At Chicago, Willson Contreras hit a two-run homer in the fifth and a walk-off RBI single in Chicago’s two-run 11th.

■ Cardinals 16, Diamondbac­ks 7: At Phoenix, Albert Pujols went 4-for-4 with two homers, pushing his career total to 692, for St. Louis.

■ Tigers 4, Angels 3: At Detroit, Tyler Alexander (3-7) allowed three runs over six innings for his first win in eight starts this season.

■ Rangers 4, Twins 3: At Minneapoli­s, Corey Seager hit a go-ahead RBI single and scored in Texas’ two-run 10th.
