Build a tunnel to supply water

-

In the Aug. 21 letter “Water pipeline could help area.” the author suggested that we get water from the Pacific Ocean, take the salt out and alleviate the water problem for Utah, Arizona, California and Nevada. Desalination, unfortunately, is energy intensive and, therefore, costly in more ways than one.

A better approach is to get fresh water from the northwest, but there are mountains, highways, towns, etc., in the way. Getting the necessary permits is practically impossible.

So, what has changed? The need, but what else? We have that wonderful boring machine.

As was proven here in Las Vegas, it can chug along down below nearly everything and make a 20-foot or so tunnel that would carry lots of water, 24/7.

Yes, there would need to be a few pumps and lakes along the way, but mostly the water would flow down the pipe — well below the ground surface.
