Guardians top Twins in 15 innings
Winning run scores on error as Cleveland pads lead in division
CLEVELAND — Austin Hedges scored on an error by shortstop Jermaine Palacios in the 15th inning as American League Central-leading Cleveland beat Minnesota for the eighth straight time, 7-6 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday.
Amed Rosario, who went 8-for13 with six RBIS in the twin bill, hit a sharp grounder that Palacios mishandled with two outs. The ball skidded into the outfield, allowing Hedges to score from third and end the 5-hour, 24-minute marathon.
The Guardians (79-66), who have won nine of their past 10, opened a 4½-game lead over the Chicago White Sox (75-71) and are seven games ahead of the thirdplace Twins (72-73).
The ninth Cleveland pitcher, Kirk Mccarty (5-2), worked three innings for the win. Dereck Rodríguez (0-1) tossed 3⅔ innings for Minnesota after being recalled from Triple-a St. Paul between games.
Nick Gordon drove in Carlos Correa with a sacrifice fly in the 13th to put the Twins up 6-5 before Rosario singled home Ernie Clement with two outs in the bottom half.
The Guardians led 5-0 in the eighth, but Minnesota tied the game on Gordon’s two-run homer off James Karinchak.
Cleveland starter Konnor Pilkington tossed 5⅔ no-hit innings before allowing a single to rookie Jose Miranda on his 81st and final pitch.
Rosario had four hits in each game of the doubleheader, including a three-run homer in the nightcap. He drove in two runs in the opener, a 5-1 victory by the Guardians.
In the first game, Cleveland ace Shane Bieber (11-8) allowed one run over eight innings to win his third consecutive start. Jose Ramirez hit a solo homer on his 30th birthday, and Owen Miller delivered a two-run double.
■ Dodgers 7, Giants 2: At San Francisco, Trayce Thompson hit a two-run homer and Justin Turner two RBI singles to back Julio Urias (17-7), who allowed one run while striking out eight over six innings.
■ Angels 2, Mariners 1: At Anaheim, Calif., Shohei Ohtani (13-8) allowed three hits while striking out eight over seven shutout innings, drove in one run and scored another.
