LIGHTS GAME REPORT

-

Saturday San Diego 2, Lights FC 1 At Cashman Field

■ RECAP: Kyle Vassell scored a stunning goal 16 seconds into the match, Elijah Martin netted another a few minutes later, and the Lights lost their fourth in a row as their postseason hopes took another hit. Managing just a win and three draws in their past 10 matches, the Lights fell to 10th place in the Western Conference, five points behind Rio Grande Valley, which holds down seventh — the final playoff position. According to Loyal social media, Vassell’s goal, he ran down an errant pass just inside the penalty box and whipped a shot by charging goalkeeper Abraham Romero, was the quickest in the USL this season. Danny Trejo kicked a goal into an open net for the Lights in the 71st minute after corralling a nifty cross from Danny Crisostomo, who deked the goalkeeper on a two-man break.

■ RECORDS: San Diego (18-9-4); Lights (10-13-7)

■ IN THE NETS: Romero stopped two shots on frame, while San Diego goalkeeper Koke Vegas didn’t notch a save.

■ ALSO: The Lights have four matches remaining to make up room in the playoff race, playing again Tuesday in a rescheduled match against Monterey Bay. Their Sept. 10 match was postponed because of what the team called “unplayable field conditions” on social media. The Lights outshot the Loyal 9-7 and were called for 21 of the match’s 40 fouls. The Lights drew six yellow cards, while San Diego, which clinched a playoff spot, was called for three.

■ NEXT: vs. Monterey Bay, 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cashman Field
