AVIATORS TOP FIVE OF THE WEEK

- Ron Kantowski Review-journal

1. Shea it again: Shea Langeliers was called up by the parent A’s on Aug. 16, but the bump in meal money didn’t preclude the catching prospect from being awarded the Mayor’s Trophy (most popular player) and Aviators Most Valuable Player award. The former Baylor Bear batted .283 with 19 homers and 56 RBIS in 92 games for Las Vegas.

2. Right-handed compliment: Pitching is an art rarely associated with hittingfriendly Las Vegas Ballpark. But Collin Wiles kept the ball down well enough at home as well as on the road to be named the Aviators’ Most Valuable Pitcher. The right-hander has posted a 9-11 record with a 5.40 ERA and tops the staff in starts, victories, innings pitched and strikeouts.

3. He digs the long ball: Matt Davidson has been around the game so long that his Baseball America bio includes a quote from former MLB manager (and UNLV star) Matt Williams from 2012. But after belting his Pcl-leading 32nd homer in a 9-3 loss to Reno on Friday, the 31-year-old first baseman is making a strong case for one more call-up to a big league club.

4. No breaking even: The Aviators were in first place in the Pacific Coast League West on July 17. But after being raided for call-ups and going 3-7 over their last 10 games through Friday, they would’ve had to sweep the last five of the season (two at home against Reno, three on the road at Sacramento) to accomplish a .500 campaign. No such luck, with a loss to Reno on Saturday.

5. Another Fantastic season: Despite continuing to slip in winning percentage, the Aviators are on firm footing at the turnstiles. They drew 8,092 for Friday’s loss to Reno, have topped the 500,000 mark in attendance for the second time and lead the PCL with 501,894 total posteriors in the seats — an average of 6,875.
