Braves blitz another ace, upend Mets

-

ATLANTA — Dansby Swanson and Matt Olson homered off Max Scherzer on Saturday, lifting Atlanta to a crucial 4-2 victory over the New York Mets and a one-game lead in the National League East.

The defending World Series champion Braves beat aces Jacob degrom and Scherzer on consecutive nights to take their biggest division lead of the season. New York, which had a 10½game cushion on June 1, faces its biggest deficit of the year with four games left.

Atlanta will try for a three-game sweep Sunday, with the winner earning the season-series tiebreaker between the teams. Though both teams are headed to the postseason, the NL East champion gets a first-round bye.

Kyle Wright (21-5) allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three in five innings as he won his eighth straight decision. The Braves have won 16 of the 27-year-old righthander’s past 17 starts.

Scherzer (11-5) was charged with four runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out four in 5⅔ innings as the Mets were knocked out of first place for the third day all season.

Wright will become the first Braves pitcher since Hall of Famer Tom Glavine in 2000 to lead the majors in wins. Wright entered Saturday 1-4 with a 6.75 ERA in six career starts and one relief appearance against the Mets.

Since Atlanta was a season low-tying four games under .500 at 23-27 after play May 31, it has gone 76-32, tying the Los Angeles Dodgers for the majors’ best record in that span.
