Allmending­er edges Gibbs for overtime Xfinity victory

A.J. Allmending­er passed leader Ty Gibbs in the Drive for the Cure 250’s first overtime and won in the second overtime in Concord, North Carolina, for his fifth NASCAR Xfinity Series win this season, second straight and fourth in a row on the hybrid road course/oval. Gibbs was second and Las Vegan Noah Gragson third. The playoff field was trimmed from 12 to eight, with reigning series champion Daniel Hemric and Las Vegan Riley Herbst among those eliminated.

■ Formula One: At Suzuka, Japan, series points leader Max Verstappen claimed pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix as he attempts to clinch his second straight season title. The 25-year-old Red Bull driver, 104 points clear of the field, has won 11 times this season and will clinch the title with a victory Sunday.
