Goodell: Changes afoot for concussion protocol
The NFL is prepared “to make a change or two” to its concussion protocol, commissioner Roger Goodell said Sunday at a fan forum in London as the league faces questions about how Miami handled quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s recent injuries.
Goodell outlined the NFL’S “intensive focus” on the issue over the past 15 years and said its medical protocols have served as templates for other sports.
The commissioner took questions only from fans; he wasn’t made available to the media Saturday. The league did not elaborate on what the potential protocol changes are or when they could come into effect.
NFL players “are getting the most extraordinary care and better than they ever have in the history of the NFL, but they deserve that, and that’s our obligation, and that’s what we need to do,” Goodell said.
■ Commanders: Rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. was activated from the non-football injury list and will make his NFL debut Sunday, six weeks after being shot twice in his right leg during an attempted carjacking. The 23-year-old thirdround draft pick out of Alabama underwent surgery but had no structural damage from the shooting.
■ Chargers: Kicker Taylor Bertolet and wide receiver Michael Bandy were promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. The status of kicker Dustin Hopkins (quadriceps) is a game-time decision for Sunday, coach Brandon Staley said.
■ Broncos: Quarterback Russell Wilson received a plateletrich plasma injection in his right (throwing) shoulder Friday to address discomfort from a latissimus dorsi strain and plans to play through the injury, NFL Network reported.
■ Titans: Rookie wide receiver Treylon Burks (toe) was placed on injured reserve, sidelining the 22-year-old first-round draft pick at least four weeks. Burks, who has 10 catches for 129 yards, is Tennessee’s 11th player on IR.
