Ruiz sets program record for 6K cross country race
Sophomore Natalia Ruiz set a UNLV cross country record in the women’s 6-kilometer run Saturday at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, California, while placing fourth in a 225-runner field. Ruiz finished in 19 minutes, 49 seconds to break the 22-year-old program mark by 49 seconds. San Francisco junior Ruby Smee won in 19:36.2. The Rebels placed 21st out of 28 teams.
■ Volleyball: At Cox Pavilion, Isabel Martin had 15 kills on .542 hitting to lead the Rebels past Boise State 25-16, 25-18, 25-22. Jhenna Gabriel had 42 assists for UNLV (16-3, 7-1 Mountain West). The Broncos (13-6, 5-3) were outhit .371 to .196.
■ Women’s tennis: At Fertitta Tennis Complex, senior Molly Helgesson fought off six match points to beat Utah freshman Kaila Barksdale 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3 to advance to the ITA Mountain Region Championships title match.
