LA Galaxy, Cincinnati win in first round of MLS Cup

Julian Araujo scored his first goal in two years as the LA Galaxy beat Nashville 1-0 in the MLS Cup playoffs’ first round in Carson, California. The Galaxy next face top-seeded Los Angeles FC on Thursday in the West semifinals. Also, Brandon Vazquez scored on an 86th-minute breakaway to lift Cincinnati past New York 2-1 in Harrison, New Jersey, for Cincinnati’s first playoff win. It next faces top-seeded Philadelph­ia on Thursday in the East semifinals.

■ College football: North Carolina State quarterbac­k Devin Leary, the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, will undergo surgery this week to repair a torn pectoral muscle sustained last week and miss the rest of the season.

■ Motor sports: At Ennis, Texas, Austin Prock (Top Fuel), Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Erica Enders (Pro Stock) and Angelle Sampey (Pro Stock Motorcycle) led Texas NHRA Fallnation­als qualifying.
