Denver QB Wilson out with injured hamstring

-

Denver quarterback Russell Wilson (hamstring) was ruled out for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, and Boise State product Brett Rypien will start in his place, coach Nathaniel Hackett said.

Rypien, 26, a third-year pro, has made one NFL start, throwing for 242 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions on Oct. 1, 2020, in the Broncos’ 37-28 win over the Jets. He went 37-12 at Boise State.

Sunday’s game will mark the fourth Wilson will miss in his 11-year NFL career. The 33-year-old nine-time Pro Bowl selection missed three games in 2021 with Seattle because of a broken finger.

Josh Johnson, 36, will be elevated from the practice squad to be Rypien’s backup.

■ Chiefs: Linebacker Willie Gay was activated after being sidelined four games for violating the NFL’S personal conduct policy in a January arrest for criminal property damage of less than $1,000. The 24-year-old had 16 tackles in the season’s first two games.

■ Lions: Punter Jack Fox signed a three-year, $11.325 million extension, making the 26-year-old the NFL’S top-paid punter. Fox leads the league in gross punting average (49.1 yards) and is second in net punting average (43.5) since entering the NFL in 2020.

■ Commanders: QB Carson Wentz (fractured right ring finger) was placed on injured reserve, sidelining the 29-year-old at least four games. Taylor Heinicke will start in his place, backed up by rookie Sam Howell.

■ Packers: Wide receiver Randall Cobb (ankle) and center Jake Hanson (biceps) were placed on injured reserve, and wide receiver Sammy Watkins (hamstring) was activated from IR.

■ Ravens: J.K. Dobbins (knee) was placed on IR, and fellow running back Gus Edwards (knee) was activated from IR.

■ Buccaneers: Cornerback Carlton Davis (hip) was downgraded to out for Sunday.
